How did you first get into your sport? I first started playing netball in primary school as a recreational outlet. As I grew an undeniable passion for the sport, I continued my netball journey through my middle and secondary school years to present day. Whilst in middle school, I was recruited by my physical educational advisor who introduced me into Winter League Netball where I have been playing ever since.
Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model, both in and out of your sport? My biggest inspiration overall is my Mother. She has wholly inspired me with her unwavering determination and dedication throughout my life. Her resilience in the face of sabotage/defeat is indomitable and persistent.
What is the most valuable lesson(s) the sport of netball has taught you? ‘Resilience & Determination.’ Reason being is that, as a player events are unpredictable which require flexibility and versatility on the court. No matter how tough the game gets, no matter what calls are made or not made, it is important to keep one’s composure and commitment to your team’s goal through it all!
Tell us about your proudest moment as an athlete? I would say that my proudest moments were/are the opportunity to participate in international games, representing my home country (Bermuda) multiple times, whether it was under 21’s or at current the Senior level.
What is your game-day routine? My game day routine is calculated and deliberate. As a mother, I would complete my recurring mommy duties, employment obligations, and other personal responsibilities. This routine keeps my mind and body active; my adrenaline already has a good flow. So, that when it is game time, there is a smoother transition for high performance; my mind and body are already in the zone.
The thoughts that go through my head in the final moments of a close or tough game? I ask myself are we winning, or can our performance be improved. If my team is winning, my aim would be to play possession and make smart passes. Alternatively, if my team is losing my aim would be to increase the magnitude of our defense strategy with a and focus mainly on repossession.
How do you handle a tough loss or performance? By reflecting on the pros and cons of not just myself, but of my team also. As I reflect on my performance, I would solely and definitively focus on areas of improvement whether that be placement or awareness. In doing so, I will retain an optimistic perspective. I revise strategy, implement it, keep calm, and carry on.
If I were not an athlete… I would be mothering my two beautiful children, working a 9-5 job while taking short term courses up Bermuda college.
What advice would you give to a young person aspiring to follow in your footsteps? EVERYTHING is ATTAINABLE!!! If YOU have a passion for something, go for it!! Never let anyone nor anything stop YOU from achieving your goals! “No risk, No reward!” “No pain, No gains!”
Finish this sentence: “My Sport means…” Life. Netball is a place where I have forged long lasting memories and meaningful friendships. It is a self rewarding activity that fulfills me with solitude and purpose.
