Netball National Team Spotlight Debré Evans

IslandStats.com
www.islandstats.com will feature a spotlight on the Bermuda Netball National Team selected for the Battle of the Isles tournament being held in St. Eustatius and St. Maarten, October 21st – 26th 2025.

Given the team has been selected well in advance of the tournament, we will give you our viewers the opportunity to help celebrate the athletes prior to them representing Bermuda.

We start the series with one of the teams captains Debré Evans

Your Full Name : Debré Shuntea Kauai Evans
Your Team/Club : Storm
Best pre-game hype song : Don’t stop me now - Queen
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
The ability to force people to tell the truth

The Athlete's Journey

How did you first get into your sport?

My mom has had me around Netball since I was an egg in her ovaries

Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model, both in and out of your sport?
My Mum Kimale Evans

What is the most valuable lesson your sport has taught you?
Just because you’re the best today doesn’t mean you’ll be the best tomorrow.

Tell us about your proudest moment as an athlete so far.
Being selected as Captain of my first Senior National Team call up, which slightly tips being awarded Best Recruit of my 2023 Firefighter Course.

Training & Competition

What’s your game-day routine?

Making sure I EAT and am hydrated!! I am the captain of my club team so just mentally preparing myself for the game ahead. I also coach so I am typically at the court all day up until my personal match.

Any specific superstitions or rituals you have to follow?
I personally think I play my best when I pay less attention to my hair, so a messy bun goes a long way. :)

What goes through your mind in the final moments of a close game or race?
Just digging deep because half the battle is mental and once you’re over that hill it’s easier to push through. In close games defense wins so any mistake is crucial.

How do you handle a tough loss or a disappointing performance?
Reflection never deflection. Win some and lose some if you’re always winning you’re not growing so take the lesson and come better next time.

Beyond the Game

What's your go-to activity when you're not training or competing?

Binge watching and laying in my bed with my cat Dior!

If you weren't an athlete, what would you be doing?
I hope there’s not a single universe where I’m not an athlete, like a shark if I'm not moving I'm probably dead.

What's one thing most people don't know about you?
I'm in love with musicals, no actually I'm obsessed. My favorite is Frozen of which I know the lyrics to every single song on the sound track!

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party (can be anyone, living or historical)? Can I say Elsa from Frozen? No. Oh ok I guess I’d invite my younger self so she can see how much we’ve grown.

Words of Wisdom

What advice would you give to a young person aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

Your biggest competitor will be yourself, strive to be better than what you were ALWAYS. There’s always room for improvement.

What's one thing you hope to achieve in the next five years, both in your sport and in life?
I hope I’m still happy and alive, thriving in life. Still healthy, still active and doing my best.

Finish this sentence: "My sport means... " My sport means the world to me like oxygen in my lungs I need netball to breathe
