Malta has been announced as the host nation for the eighth edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in 2027, with the event set to welcome over 1,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories to compete across eight sports.
The Commonwealth Sport's decision to award the games to Malta is part of a commitment to bring the event to new and smaller island nations. The unique "dual-island concept" will utilise existing world-class facilities across both Malta and Gozo.
The sports program for the 2027 Games has been designed to appeal to a youth audience and maximise the use of state-of-the-art venues. It will feature Athletics and Para Athletics, Netball, Squash, Swimming and Para Swimming, Triathlon, and Weightlifting, while Sailing and Water Polo will make their debut at a CYG.
With the event now formally on the calendar, the focus for Bermuda’s National Sports Governing Bodies will be on identifying and nurturing the island's most promising young athletes. The Bermuda Sailing Association, Bermuda National Athletics Association, Netball Bermuda, Bermuda Squash Racquets Association, Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association, and the Bermuda Triathlon Association will all be looking to support their eligible youth athletes aged 14 to 18 in preparation for this prestigious competition.
Bermuda's national sports bodies are now expected to be working closely to ensure their athletes receive the necessary coaching, resources, and support to compete at the highest level. The Commonwealth Youth Games represents a significant opportunity for the island's next generation of sporting talent to gain invaluable experience on a major international stage.
