Boys & MacGuinness Victorious & Hopkins Competes NYC

The Bermuda Bicycle Association's Road Race season resumed with the V.T. Construction Road Race, hosted by Dominique Mayho and officiated by Anna Moniz. The morning saw a strong field of riders across two starts, with Categories A & B setting off first, followed by Categories C & Women.

In the fiercely contested A category, Matt Boys emerged victorious, completing the course in a time of 1 hour, 56 minutes, and 27 seconds. Veteran cyclist Tyler Butterfield finished closely behind in second place, clocking 1 hour, 57 minutes, and 24 seconds. The final podium spot was decided by a tight sprint finish, with Steven Smith narrowly edging out Dylan Eiselt and Will Drea for third place, all registering a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 1 second.

Wayne Scott claimed the win in the B Division, crossing the line in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 43 seconds. Alan Mooney and McQuinn Burch completed the B category podium behind Scott, with times of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 10 seconds, and 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 46 seconds respectively.

Category C delivered one of the most exciting finishes of the day, with a sprint amongst seven riders. Tracy Wright managed to take the win, clocking 1 hour, 31 minutes, and 17 seconds. Gianluca Bortoli finished just fractions of a second behind in second place with a time of 1 hour, 31 minutes, and 20 seconds, with Sanchez Smith claiming third place with the same time of 1 hour, 31 minutes, and 20 seconds.

The Women’s race saw Arlene MacGuinness secure a clear victory, completing the course in 1 hour, 52 minutes, and 29 seconds. Skye Ferguson finished behind MacGuinness in second place, clocking a time of 1 hour, 55 minutes, and 37 seconds.

Meanwhile, Bermudian cyclist Kaden Hopkins competed in the 2nd Annual Gran Premio New York City, a UCI 1.2 Men’s Elite pro race. The event featured an innovative format, commencing ten minutes before the 13th Michelob ULTRA Gran Fondo New York (GFNY) World Championship NYC, a mass participation race held on the same 137-kilometer (85-mile) loop through Bergen County, NJ, and Rockland County, NY.

The challenging course included 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) of climbing. Hopkins, riding for the Puerto Rica, Prestige Cycling Foundation Team, finished in 38th place with a time of 3 hours, 13 minutes, and 36 seconds. Sean Christian claimed victory in the race, clocking a winning time of 3 hours, 5 minutes, and 49 seconds, finishing 7 minutes and 47 seconds ahead of Hopkins.
