The Field Hockey team at Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute has been invited to play the Bermuda National Team.
"It's the chance of a lifetime," said coach Cathy Chant. "The kids are so excited. We've been fundraising like crazy."
She said the girls have been counting down the days until they leave for the trip. Sixteen players are heading to Bermuda on Friday, March 11 and returning on March 18. The team will play three matches against the National Team.
The team will wear new red and black uniforms donated especially for the trip.
Chant said she coached the Tier 1 to second place in the city championships, so they just missed going to the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association (OFSAA). The Tier 2 team got the top spot of the east region championship last fall. The Tier 1 team members are the lucky players heading south.
Being invited to compete in Bermuda was a complete surprise, Chant said, "It's amazing," she said. "We work hard and it's great when something nice like this comes along."
Chant said she is passionate about coaching and tries to show that passion to her players, "But I certainly didn't expect anything like this to come along," she said. "It's been a labor of love. It's nice to get a little bit of recognition."
