 Matilda Nicholls IslandStats.com UK Optimist National Championships
Last week, the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association had sailors competing in the 500 boat UK Optimist National Championships held at Weymouth on the South Coast of England, the venue for the 2012 Olympics.
www.islandstats.com last week reported that Rory Caslin sailed really well in the Senior Fleet for the first part of the week to qualify himself for the Gold Fleet. Caslin finished the week a 75th in a strong 161 boat fleet.
Meanwhile Matilda Nicholls raced in the Regatta Coaching Fleet (equivalent of the Green Fleet), she won 2 of the 13 races and counted 7 top 5 results. Nicholls finished 5th out of 82 boats and was awarded the Little Charger Trophy for the 1st Under 10 sailor, she was also presented with the Musto Award for Sailor of the Week by the Coach of the Regatta Fleet.
Florence Nicholls raced in the Regatta Starter Fleet of 36 boats. Nicholls finished 4th overall and managed to finish 1st and 2nd in the last two races of the Regatta.
New England Championship
The Ernst & Young 2010 USODA New England Championship hosted by Sail Newport got underway.
This event is the highlight of the Opti racing season, being sailed on the waters of Narragansett Bay and Newport.
With one of the largest fleets consisting of 330 boats, Bermuda has two sailors participating Chase Cooper and Ellie Wollmann.
On Day One in windy conditions Wollmann did well to recover from a capsize in the first race to finish 23rd, she then followed up with 3 top 10 finishes of 6th, 5the and 5th and is in 28th position overall and 8th in the Female Division. Cooper is currently 133rd with a top finish of 25th in the day’s second race. Cooper also had finishes of 42nd, 40th and 32nd.
