The Bermuda Ladies Under 17 hockey team began competing in the first ever Pan-American Youth Championships going on at the Carrasco Polo Club in Montevideo Uruguay.
Bermuda manager Juliette Oatley said, “We faced off against a very strong USA team in their opening match, although we went down 11-0 it should be noted that it took 22 minutes (out of 35minutes) for the USA to score in the second half”.
Oatley reiterated what she had said prior to leaving the island, “Although the team is very realistic about the match scores the team can be expected to work very hard and hopefully put together some pleasing hockey which this squad can build on for the future”.
“The girls did well with a strong defense, led by Goalkeeper and the Vice Captain Latonia Fray, who managed to save a total of 33 shots.
The defense of Safiya Nurse, Ryanne Bardgett, Emily Chadderton, Iman Smith and Rhea Gibbons held firm defending the 24 penalty corners called against them, allowing the US to only convert 4 into goals.
