Roy Disney, nephew of Walt Disney and son of Disney co-founder Roy O. Disney, who died in Newport Beach, California last week after a year-long battle with stomach cancer, was the first person to hold both Transpac and Newport/Bermuda race records simultaneously.
Disney's 75ft Reichel-Pugh designed Pyewacket broke the 635mile Bermuda Race course record in 2002 with a time of 53hrs: 39mins: 20secs - a record that has still to be beaten. "Not bad for down-wind sled competing in an upwind race" he chuckled at the time.
Disney's presence will be missed by both West and East coast sailing communities.
