Top seed Blaise Bicknell and Poland’s Kacper Szymkowiak delivered commanding displays to power their way into the singles final as double-header action lit up the ITF M15 International Tennis Tournament at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.
Under clear skies in Pembroke, competitors faced a gruelling schedule featuring both the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the men’s singles, alongside high-stakes quarter-final action in the doubles draw.
Jamaica’s Bicknell proved imperious throughout the day, underlining his status as the tournament favourite with a pair of ruthless performances. In the morning quarter-finals, the number one seed brushed aside fifth-seeded American Noah Schachter 6-2, 6-3. Bicknell carried that sharp rhythm straight into the semi-finals, conceding only two games in a clinical 6-1, 6-1 dismantling of Canada’s fourth seed Alvin Nicholas Tudorica.
Tudorica had earlier advanced from the last eight after eighth seed Paul Colin of France was forced to retire due to injury while trailing 7-5, 4-2.
Meeting Bicknell on championship Sunday will be Poland’s sixth seed Kacper Szymkowiak, who enjoyed an equally dominant run through the bottom half of the draw. Szymkowiak opened his account by stunning second-seeded American Keshav Chopra 6-2, 6-0 in a one-sided quarter-final affair.
The Polish standout maintained that relentless intensity in the semi-finals, sweeping past seventh-seeded American Jacob Brumm 6-1, 6-3. Brumm had earned his place in the penultimate round after edging third-seeded compatriot Matt Kuhar in a tight quarter-final tussle, winning 6-2, 7-6.
Doubles action brought a pulsating mix of straight-sets control and match-tiebreak drama. Top-seeded American tandem Keshav Chopra and Matt Kuhar put their singles setbacks behind them, navigating past Henry Bilicic and Alexander Wriedt 6-4, 6-3 to punch their ticket to the last four.
Barbadian duo Kaipo Marshall and Stephen Slocombe also secured semi-final berths with a disciplined 7-6, 6-4 victory over Juan Sebastian Dominguez Collado of Guatemala and Aydan Gomez Osorio of Curacao.
Local interest was front and centre as Bermuda’s Richard Mallory teamed up with Jamaican John Chin against third-seeded American pair Nathan Cox and Jeffrey Fradkin. After dropping the opener, Mallory and Chin staged a determined fightback to force a deciding tiebreak, but the American duo held their nerve in the clutch moments to take the contest 7-5, 3-6, 10-3.
Second seeds Noah Schachter and Gray Voelzke also survived a super-tiebreak thriller, rallying from a set down to edge out Mitchell Dobek and Drew Van Orderlain 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 to round out an absorbing day on court.
