Bermudian standout Daniel Phillips held his nerve through a dramatic tie-break to advance to the semi-finals of the 2026 American Athletic Conference Individual Championships.
The Tulane University sophomore and tournament second seed produced a disciplined, resilient display in the quarter-finals to overcome Florida Atlantic’s tenth-seeded Jose David Segovia 6-4, 7-6 (12-10).
The victory carried extra satisfaction for Phillips, who had been edged out by Segovia and partner Lucca Pignaton in the doubles draw earlier in the tournament.
Phillips asserted authority from the baseline in the opening set, dictating extended exchanges with heavy groundstrokes and securing the decisive break to take it 6-4.
The second set developed into a tense, baseline war of attrition. Both players traded holds under mounting pressure, ultimately forcing a marathon tie-break.
With the margin for error razor-thin, Segovia pushed Phillips to the brink as the pair traded set points and match points in an exhausting shootout. However, the young Bermudian showed supreme composure in the decisive moments, finally converting to seal the tie-break 12-10 and punch his ticket to the final four.
Phillips now moves into the semi-final stage for the Green Wave, remaining firmly on course in his bid for individual conference silverware.
