Bermudian coach Jovan Jordan-Whitter oversaw an eventful start to Hampton University’s autumn campaign, as the Lady Pirates recorded a win and a defeat at the CNU Duals at Christopher Newport.
Hampton hit the ground running in their opener against host Christopher Newport, roaring back from an early setback to claim an emphatic 5-2 victory.
The hosts drew first blood by taking the doubles point with victories at the top two spots. However, Jordan-Whitter's side turned the tie on its head in dominant fashion across the singles rubbers, capturing five of the six matches. Samira Khazieva led from the front with a victory at the number one position, while Serena Bryan, Toffee Ghorab, Tanya Midzi, and Melissa Sakiroglu all followed suit to seal a comprehensive team triumph.
Weather disruptions forced alterations to the tournament schedule, leading the Pirates into a quick turnaround the following day against Longwood.
Hampton opened brightly by sweeping the doubles rubber. The pairing of Midzi and Ghorab battled past Shoybek and Miettinen 6-4, while Mitic and Khazieva edged out Eijkelenburg and Magia 7-5.
Despite seizing the early momentum, the Pirates were unable to carry that form into singles play, where the Lancers mounted a ruthless response, sweeping all five singles contests to close out the weekend.
