Bermudian karting stalwart Scott Barnes has paid an emotional tribute to the Rock Island Grand Prix, describing his place among the event's all-time greats as one of the defining achievements of his career.
Taking to social media following his latest campaign at the prestigious American street circuit in Illinois, Barnes reflected on cementing third place on the event's all-time victories leaderboard alongside some of the sport's most decorated competitors.
"The Rock Island Grand Prix has been a huge part of my racing career," Barnes said. "To be third all-time on a list of some legends of the sport is an honour. To do this coming from a small island and never being able to race my own karts, it’s an achievement I hold high in my racing career."
Known for its punishing barriers, unpredictable bumps, and relentless speed, the annual street race is regarded as one of the most demanding tests in North American karting. While Barnes has collected a glittering haul of victories over the years, the Bermudian admitted the narrow margins between glory and heartbreak still linger.
"I should have a lot more wins here—too many second and third-place finishes to remember, but if you're not first you’re last," Barnes added.
"Street racing is so different from normal track racing; it’s a passion that runs deep for me, and at a place like Rock Island it is so hard to win. I hope this race comes back bigger and better next year and we can add some more wins to the belt.
"Thanks for all the good times, heartaches, and great memories, Rock Island Grand Prix, and to all who have made this race possible through the years."
