Bermudian defender Danni Watson and her West Virginia State University teammates shared the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Kutztown University at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.
The hard-fought nonconference encounter moves the Yellow Jackets to 0-1-1 on the season, while the visiting Golden Bears stand at 1-0-1.
Following a competitive first half where goalkeepers held sway, the contest erupted after the interval with four goals packed into a frantic second period.
The opening 45 minutes saw chances at both ends, with Kutztown creating the game's first clear opening in the 25th minute, only for WVSU goalkeeper Celina Seggelmann to turn the effort away. Just before the break, Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz came close to breaking the deadlock for the hosts, but her effort drifted narrowly high.
The Yellow Jackets seized the initiative straight after the restart:
Fast Start: Just three minutes into the second half, Leila Karam found the target to register her first goal of the season and put WVSU 1-0 ahead.
Instant Exchange: Kutztown responded seven minutes later to level at 1-1, but the hosts hit back immediately. Just seconds after the restart, Sharon Freire Omonigho pounced on a rebound to claim her first goal of the campaign and restore WVSU’s lead at 2-1.
Late Drama: The Golden Bears forced their second equalizer in the 76th minute when Giavanna Marciano broke through on a counter to make it 2-2.
Kutztown pushed hard for a late decider, striking the right post in the 88th minute, while a final WVSU attempt in the dying seconds sailed just over the crossbar.
Seggelmann anchored the Yellow Jackets' defensive effort alongside Watson, finishing the afternoon with a career-high four saves in net to secure the point.
