Mewett touched the wall in 2:37.67 to finish 11th overall, producing a historic swim that sliced nearly five full seconds off the previous mark.
The previous long-standing record of 2:42.25 had stood since July 1, 1992, when Jennifer Smatt set the time while representing her nation at the Barcelona Olympic Games in Spain.
Mewett's performance in Knoxville caps a landmark personal achievement, bringing down one of the most durable records in the discipline.
