Phillips cruises past Sotikovs in Turkey Qualifying Opener

IslandStats.com
Bermudian tennis prospect Daniel Phillips made a flawless start to his latest campaign on the ITF World Tennis Tour, dispatching Latvia's Aleksandrs Sotikovs in straight sets to advance at the M15 Kayseri tournament.

Playing on the hard courts in Turkey, the 21-year-old completely dominated the opening-round qualifying encounter, needing little time to wrap up a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Phillips, who has been building steady momentum on the international circuit, broke his opponent’s serve early in the first set and never looked back.

Sotikovs struggled to cope with the Bermudian’s aggressive baseline play and heavy groundstrokes. Phillips surrendered just one game in a one-sided opening set before continuing his clinical rhythm into the second.

The Latvian offered slightly more resistance in the second set, but Phillips quickly squashed any hopes of a comeback. He secured two further breaks of serve to wrap up the contest comfortably and punch his ticket to the second qualifying round.

The dominant display gives Phillips an ideal launchpad as he targets a spot in the main tournament draw in Kayseri.
