Somerset Eagles 2 Devonshire Colts 1
Somerset Eagles held their nerve to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Devonshire Colts in a tense, solitary Bermuda Football Association Under-23 clash at Bernard Park.
In a match that showcased the island's emerging young talent, the Eagles capitalised on crucial moments either side of the interval to pocket all three points, despite a spirited second-half fightback from the Colts.
The opening period was a cagey affair, with both defensive units standing firm under the Bernard Park lights. However, just as the first half looked destined to end goalless, the breakthrough arrived on the stroke of half-time.
In the 44th minute, Marco Basden showed superb composure to fire the West Enders ahead, delivering a psychological hammer blow to the Colts just before the referee's whistle.
Buoyed by their opener, the Eagles flew out of the blocks in the second half. Their persistent pressure paid off just before the hour mark when Sekai Tatem doubled the advantage in the 59th minute, leaving the Colts with a mountain to climb at 2-0.
To their credit, the Devonshire outfit refused to roll over. They threw bodies forward and dragged themselves right back into the contest just six minutes later.
Shane Robinson found space in the box to rifle home a fine strike in the 65th minute, breathing life back into the Colts' dugout and setting up a grandstand finish.
The final 25 minutes turned into a tactical chess match. Devonshire Colts pushed aggressively for an equaliser, but the Eagles' backline remained resolute. Excellent goalkeeping at both ends prevented any further additions to the scoreline as the referee eventually blew for full-time, sealing a vital win for the Somerset Eagles.
