Bermuda’s rising youth sailing stars delivered a resilient day of racing to climb the global rankings at the high-performance 2026 Optimist North American Championship in Halifax, Canada.
Hosted by the historic Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, the continental showpiece tested the tactical adaptability of the international fleet as qualifying rounds officially concluded. The critical fleet split saw the island's nine-strong contingent divided into Gold, Silver, and Bronze brackets based on their structural point tallies.
Heath Meyers continues to set an exceptional physical baseline as the definitive leader of the local traveling squad. Having entered the high-stakes morning session in 21st place overall within the elite Gold Fleet, Meyers executed two highly disciplined races to jump up into 19th position, anchoring his baseline with a sharp 144 net points.
Teammate Jesse Savage matched that competitive grit with a magnificent surge of his own in the Gold Fleet. Savage launched his day buried in 54th place but read the shifting Canadian breeze beautifully to come off the water in a vastly improved 47th overall, accumulating 220 net points.
The tactical battle lines were equally congested within the Silver Fleet, where five Bermudian athletes jostled for valuable international mileage.
Rex Henagulph spearheaded the local mid-table charge, holding his composure cleanly under intense pressure on the crowded start lines to secure 64th place overall with 124 net points.
Elaine Jones maintains her distinguished position as the top performing Bermudian female sailor at the regatta. Jones crossed the digital line to occupy 74th overall with 157 net points, putting clear water between herself and teammate Miguel Leite, who safely navigated his way to 93rd place with 203 net points.
Rounding out the tightly bunched Silver Fleet scorecard for the island are Calypso Coulter and Walker Smith, remarkably deadlocked together on exactly 239 net points apiece, sitting in 108th and 113th respectively.
