Bermuda’s young triathletes have reached a significant milestone as the International Olympic Committee confirmed the island has secured a quota place for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

In a landmark announcement for the sport, World Triathlon revealed that a record 63 National Olympic Committees have been allocated spots for the fourth edition of the Games. It will be a historic occasion, marking the first time an Olympic event has been staged on African soil.

Bermuda is among a prestigious list of 32 nations to secure a slot in the Men’s Individual Sprint event. This achievement highlights the strength of the island’s youth development pathways, placing a Bermudian athlete on a start line that features the most diverse field in the history of the Youth Olympics.

The Dakar Games, running from October 31st to November 13th, 2026, will see 64 athletes compete under the motto 'Africa Welcomes, Dakar Celebrates.' For many, this will be their first experience of elite competition under the Olympic banner.

"Dakar 2026 is a historic moment for World Triathlon and for our sport," said World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany. "To see 63 nations competing on African soil for the first time is a testament to the incredible work of our national federations. Seeing 27 nations compete in YOG triathlon for the very first time shows that our sport continues to grow in every corner of the globe."

The Triathlon is scheduled to take centre stage on November 5th and 6th, 2026. While the quota place for Bermuda is now guaranteed, the island's governing body has until 25 September 2026 to officially register their selected athlete from the list of eligible candidates.

The competition in Dakar promises to be a transformative experience for the 2,700 athletes involved across 25 sports. The Games will also feature the debut of a Youth Refugee Olympic Team, further emphasizing the IOC’s commitment to inclusive sport.

For Bermuda, the confirmation of this quota place ensures that the island's rising stars will continue to be represented at the highest international level, following in the footsteps of the country's decorated Olympic heritage.
