Traffic Alert - National Olympic Distance Championships

IslandStats.com
Motorists are being advised to plan ahead for significant race-day traffic shifts later this month, as the Bermuda Triathlon Association (BTA) prepares to host the Emma Norman National Olympic Distance Championships.

The event, which doubles as a premier regional qualifier, is set to take place on Sunday, April 26th, 2026. The Ministry of Public Works and Environment has confirmed that while roads will remain open, the speed limit will be raised to 55km/h between 8:00 am and 9:45 am on specific stretches from Clearwater Beach to Kindley Field to accommodate the safety of high-speed cycling.

The bicycle portion of the race will be a tactical test of endurance, with athletes navigating a three-lap circuit. Commencing at the Triathlon Shed at Clearwater Beach, the route follows a northerly path:

The Route North: Athletes will travel along Cooper Island Road, crossing the roundabout at Pepper Hall and Southside Road (taking the second exit).

The St. David’s Loop: The course continues along Pepper Hall Road, crossing Tommy Fox Road before a sharp left turn onto St. David’s Road.

The Kindley Field Turnaround: Cyclists will head westerly to the Kindley Field Road roundabout near the St. George’s swing bridge.

The 'U' Turn: A temporary traffic cone will be stationed in the middle of Kindley Field Road, just before the Airport Roundabout. This marks the turnaround point where cyclists will perform a 'U' turn to head back toward Clearwater.

Participants will complete two full laps of this circuit before returning to the Triathlon Shed on their third and final lap to transition into the run.

Bermuda Police Service officers and race marshals will be stationed at five key junctions to ensure the smooth flow of both athletes and the motoring public. Officials have noted that this is not a draft-legal race, meaning bike speeds may be slightly more manageable for passing, but motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution.

"We are requesting the full cooperation of the motoring public," a Ministry spokesperson stated. "Please follow the directions of Police and Race Officials and show consideration for the participants by not impeding their route."
