Miles Outerbridge continues to rewrite the Bermudian record books, shattering a long-standing national junior mark on a blistering second day at the 53rd Carifta Games in Grenada.
Fresh from his historic gold medal in the 100m, Outerbridge returned to the Kirani James Athletic Stadium with similar intent in the Under-20 Boys 200m. Competing in the fourth heat, the 18-year-old powered off the bend to clock a sensational 20.54 seconds. The time comfortably secured his heat victory and, more significantly, toppled the Bermuda Junior Record of 20.91 seconds which had stood for nearly half a century.
The previous record was set by Vaughn Harvey in Barbados on April 25, 1977. Outerbridge’s performance not only erases that 49-year-old landmark but also sees him head into the final as the second-fastest qualifier, firmly positioning him as a dual-gold medal threat.
It was a testing session for the wider Bermudian sprint contingent as they faced the Caribbean’s elite. In the Under-17 Girls 200m preliminaries, Amara Samuels delivered a spirited run to finish 12th overall with a time of 25.17 seconds, while Arima Turner placed 20th in a high-caliber Under-20 Girls field, stopping the clock in 25.31.
In the Under-17 Boys division, Zydon Lightbourne Furbert showcased his versatility following his 400m final appearance. Furbert navigated the half-lap sprint in 22.17 seconds to claim 10th place overall, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final.
All eyes now turn to the evening session, where Outerbridge will look to add the 200m crown to his 100m title and cement his status as the standout performer of the championships.
