Outerbridge Smashes National Record to Claim Gold

IslandStats.com
Bermuda has its first Gold Medal of the 53rd Carifta Games in sensational style as Miles Outerbridge etched his name into the history books with a record-breaking performance in the 100m.

In a night that will be remembered for years to come, Outerbridge stunned the field in the Under 20 Boys 100 meter final. Blasting out of the blocks, he maintained his composure to stop the clock at a blistering 10.21 seconds. The time does more than just secure the top step of the podium; it officially makes Outerbridge the fastest Bermudian in history.

The performance toppled a long-standing landmark in island athletics, surpassing the previous national record of 10.27 seconds set by DaVon Bean nearly three decades ago in 1996. Outerbridge’s historic sprint provided the highlight of a competitive second session for the Bermudian contingent, who held their own against the Caribbean’s elite.

In the Under 17 Boys 400 meter final, Zydon Lightbourne Furbert delivered a gritty performance to secure a fifth-place finish. Furbert crossed the line in 49.35 seconds, narrowly missing out on the podium positions in a race defined by a rapid opening turn.

The middle-distance events tested the endurance of the younger athletes under the stadium lights. In the Under 17 Girls 1500 meter run, Riana Robinson fought hard in a tactical race to claim seventh place with a time of 4:55.08. Her teammate, Elena Bortoli, showed great determination to finish 12th in the same heat, clocking 5:16.77.

On the boys' side of the 1500 meter discipline, Gianluca Bortoli represented the island with a strong run to finish ninth. Facing a high-tempo pace from the Kenyan-influenced regional styles, Bortoli managed to hold his position and finish in a respectable 4:11.71.

While the distance runners showed immense heart, the evening belonged to Outerbridge. His golden moment and national record have provided a significant boost to the Bermuda camp as they look to build on this early momentum in the coming sessions.
