Wade Agonizingly Close as Carifta Window Slams Shut

Kelise Wade Taking Off

The tension was palpable at the Flora Duffy South Field Stadium this weekend as Bermuda’s rising track stars faced their final hurdle for regional selection. The Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) hosted its definitive Carifta Trial, providing a high-stakes "last chance" for athletes to punch their tickets to the 2026 Games in Grenada.

While several athletes have already secured their places on the plane, the day was defined by the narrowest of margins. Kelise Wade, competing in the Under-17 Women’s 400 Meter Dash, delivered a gritty performance that brought the crowd to its feet. Wade stopped the clock at 58.48 seconds, which was a Personal Best, a valiant effort that saw her finish less than half a second shy of the 58.14 qualifying standard. It was a heartbreaking result for the young sprinter, who has shown consistent improvement throughout the qualifying series.

The conclusion of the meet marks the official end of the qualifying window. BNAA officials are now expected to convene for a final selection meeting, with the official team announcement scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, March 15th.

Selection will be a complex task for the association, as they weigh automatic qualifiers against those who have hovered consistently near the standards. To date, the squad features a strong core of talent that have met the standards including sprinters Amara Samuels and Miles Outerbridge, and middle-distance specialists Sanchez Smith, Elena Bortoli, and Gianluca Bortoli.

As the focus shifts from the track to the selection room, the anticipation within the local athletics community is at an all-time high. For those who have met the criteria, the journey to the Kirani James Athletic Stadium begins in earnest. For those who fell just short, the focus will inevitably turn to the upcoming domestic season and the lessons learned during a grueling qualifying campaign.
