The Bermuda National Athletics Association continued its search for regional glory this weekend as the Flora Duffy South Field Stadium hosted another high-stakes Carifta Games Qualifier. With the 2026 Games in St. George’s, Grenada fast approaching, the island's elite middle-distance prospects delivered a series of clinical performances at the National Sports Center.
Gianluca Bortoli and Sanchez Smith, who had both previously secured their spots for the Grenada showcase, showed no signs of complacency. Competing in the Under 20 Men’s 1500 Meter Run, Bortoli demonstrated his tactical maturity by finishing well under the qualification threshold with a time of 4:17.39. Meanwhile, in the Under 17 division, Smith maintained his impressive early-season form, stopping the clock at 4:20.01 to further cement his status as a medal threat.
The highlight of the afternoon, however, came in the Under 17 Women’s 1500 Meter Run, where Elena Bortoli officially punched her ticket to the Games. Facing a daunting qualifying standard of 5:06.00, Bortoli produced a powerful finishing kick to cross the line in 5:00.88. The race for a second qualifying spot was agonizingly close; Brooklyn Myers finished in second place with a time of 5:06.51, falling less than a second short of the mark despite a resilient effort. With several qualifiers remaining on the local calendar, the focus now shifts to whether Myers and the rest of the developmental squad can join the trio already destined for the Caribbean stage.
