Bermudian karting champion Scott Barnes, competing in the prestigious SKUSA SuperNationals at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, has endured a frustrating and unlucky start to the Heat Races in the Master Shifter Class.
Barnes, who has previously secured podium finishes in this highly elite North American karting event, is competing in a field that featured 47 karts and eight different nationalities.
The day began on a subdued note for the Bermudian. In the Warm Up race, Barnes finished 30th, with his fastest lap time recorded at 46.710 seconds.
However, his misfortune truly began in the scheduled heat races: Heat One: Barnes was unable to finish the first heat after being run into, recording a DNF. Heat Two: His bad luck continued in the second heat, where he recorded a second DNF after another kart spun out right in front of him, causing him to crash.
The consecutive DNFs marked a disappointing start for Barnes, who had shown competitive pace in the practice sessions, clocking a fastest time of 45.601 seconds in qualifying. The multiple collisions left Barnes with a significant challenge to advance to SuperSunday, echoing similar misfortune he experienced in previous years where early collisions forced him to start near the back of the grid.
Barnes is a top-tier international driver who has previously clinched two wins in the Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix and finished third overall at the prestigious SKUSA SuperNationals.
