Vieira & Rodrigues Jr Help Eckerd Finish 10th in Nevins Trophy

IslandStats.com
Bermuda’s Jordan Vieira and Paul Rodrigues Jr., representing Eckerd College, helped their team secure a tenth-place finish at the highly competitive Nevins Trophy regatta in New York, as poor weather and a looming Nor’easter forced the cancellation of the second day of racing.

The opening day at the US Naval Academy Sailing Center saw challenging and inconsistent conditions.

Eckerd got off to an impressive start, sitting third overall after three races in Division A and two in Division B. However, competitors were pulled from the water due to light rain and wildly fluctuating winds, which later filled in, ranging from a tricky 3 to 12 knots.

When the racing was halted for good after six completed races in both divisions, Eckerd stood 10th out of 17 teams with 107 points. The decision to cancel all racing on Day Two was made early due to the powerful Nor'easter forecasted to bring dangerous 40-60 knot gusts.

Division A: Bermudian Jordan Vieira, sailing with Tia Soultankakis, finished 10th overall in their division with 59 points. The pair secured two top-five finishes, with their best placement being fourth in race two.
Division B: Bermudian Paul Rodrigues Jr. and Avery Guck had an excellent showing, finishing 7th in their division with 48 points. They secured top-five results in both the second and final races of the shortened regatta.

The combined efforts saw Eckerd finish the regatta in a respectable 10th place, a performance overshadowed by the dramatic decision to send all sailors home early for safety.
