The Bermuda Ball Hockey Winter League season burst into life at the PCC Hockey Rink last night, with the opening match between Alexandra Mosher and Spine & Sport requiring an overtime winner to settle an enthralling, high-scoring contest.
The match proved to be a back-and-forth epic, featuring multiple lead changes and brilliant individual performances, ultimately going the way of Spine & Sport with a 7-6 victory.
Alexandra Mosher started strongly in the First Period, taking the lead through Eddie Goddard. Their advantage was soon doubled when Ian Beaudoin found the net, but Spine & Sport quickly responded with a goal from Jake Fenske to keep the deficit tight.
The goals continued to flow in the Second Period, with Beaudoin registering his second goal for Alexandra Mosher, only for Ryan Bates to pull Spine & Sport back to within one goal, leaving the score poised at 3-2 heading into the final period.
The third period delivered a flurry of goals and a dramatic comeback. Alexandra Mosher initially extended their lead to 4-2 after Goddard scored his second of the game.
However, Kris Abramowski netted twice for Spine & Sport to keep the pressure on. Although Beaudoin completed his hat-trick to give Alexandra Mosher a seemingly comfortable 5-3 cushion, Spine & Sport launched an incredible late rally.
Johnny Talbot scored to draw the teams level for the first time in the game at 5-5. Fenske then scored his second to sensationally give Spine & Sport the lead at 6-5. But the drama was not over yet; Dave Macphee immediately responded for Alexandra Mosher, levelling the game at 6-6 and forcing the match into sudden-death overtime.
In the extra period, it was Kris Abramowski who proved the decisive factor. Completing a fantastic evening's work, Abramowski slammed home the winning goal for Spine & Sport, sealing a thrilling 7-6 overtime victory and kicking off the Winter League season with a classic contest.
