Mello Named Player of the Week & Match in St Mary's Debut

Bermudian goalkeeper Tomas Mello has made a sensational debut for St Mary’s University (SMU) in Halifax, being named Player of the Match after a heroic performance in his first game, Mello was also named SMU Men’s Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending September 14, 2025.
The walk-on player, who joined the team at the start of the month, was given a chance to start after injuries sidelined the two other goalkeepers. Mello seized the opportunity, making eight crucial saves to help his team secure a 2-1 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men's soccer action at Wickwire Field.
Mello, a product of FC Bascome's academy, where he has played for the last 13 years, also previously trained under coach Dashun Cooper at the Bermuda Goalkeeper Academy. His impressive debut in Canadian university soccer comes after a successful season with X-Roads, where he helped the team earn promotion to the Premier Division.
