Bermuda’s Wushu team were able to complete a full training session in Brazil on Monday as they finalized preparations for the 17th World Wushu Championships.
The session provided the small contingent with a final chance to acclimatise and run through routines before early-morning formalities. Kaelin Cox and Ryah Symonds are due to weigh in at 06:00 on Tuesday, with Cox scheduled to compete across three competition days — Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
San da (combat) action in the 65kg division begins on Wednesday, though whether Bermuda’s Krista Dyer will fight that day depends on the outcome of the official draw. The entire 70kg category is slated to kick off on Thursday.
Wushu at world championship level is split between taolu (forms) and san da (full-contact combat). For smaller teams such as Bermuda’s, the championships offer valuable exposure to high-calibre opposition and an opportunity to measure progress on the international stage.
Bermuda’s athletes have focused on sharpening timing and conditioning during the final run-throughs. With weigh-ins completed and competition days confirmed, attention now turns to the draw and the matchups that will determine how soon each athlete steps onto the mat.
