Dickinson Shines at Golden Jubilee National Championships

IslandStats.com
Bermudian sailor Stephen Dickinson made a remarkable impact at the Noble Marine Streaker Golden Jubilee National Championships this week, finishing a superb eighth overall and being crowned the Great Grand Masters Division Champion. The event, held at Costa del Edith Weston, saw an unprecedented 102 Streaker sailors descend on the waters, marking the largest fleet ever assembled for the class.

The Streaker, designed 50 years ago by the late Jack Holt, has evolved from its original plywood design to today's modern FRP hull, maintaining its classic lines while incorporating contemporary features.

Despite only one day of racing which packed in five races, Dickinson showcased his skill and adaptability. Remarkably, he borrowed a boat and was lent sails for the championship. His day began with a 6th place finish in the first race. "I felt good up until the final race, I had worked really hard in the previous races. In race one, I went around the mark about 20th, and worked my way to 6th, I was still figuring the boat out in that first race,” Dickinson told www.islandstats.com.

He then found his rhythm, delivering an impressive string of three consecutive fourth-place finishes in the demanding conditions of 25 degrees, sunshine, and a 7-8 knot breeze. Dickinson concluded the regatta with a 15th place finish in the fifth and final race.

"I have never sailed five races in one day and the final race I had very little left in the tank, but I fought through it," Dickinson added. "I really had fun learning this boat and sailing in this event."

The overall championship was dominated by Tom Gillard, who secured victory with an outstanding four first-place finishes and a total of 4 points. Martin Penty finished second with 7 points, and Ollie Groves claimed third with 10 points. Archie Burton (11 points) and Giles Therkelson Smith (14 points) rounded out the top five.

Dickinson's performance, particularly his Great Grand Masters title amidst such a large and competitive fleet, is a testament to his enduring talent and passion for the sport.
