Cyclist Conor White, fresh from his victory in the National Road Race Championship, has been reflecting on his recent performances in the UK, where he is currently competing in a series of intense circuit races. White's demanding schedule saw him finish 18th in the recent Ilkley Cycle Race, crossing the line 45 seconds behind winner Milo Wills. This followed a tough outing at the Otley Grand Prix where he was unfortunately three laps down due to a mechanical issue.
White provided insight into the distinct nature of the British racing scene compared to what he's experienced previously. "It’s great to be back racing with the team in the UK," White stated. "This month is mainly circuit races, six circuit races this month, before a nice two-week block of road racing in France with the team in August."
He highlighted the differences that make these UK circuits particularly challenging. "These circuit races are a lot different to the US criterium scene," White explained. "Way harder, tighter and more technical courses mean that positioning is super important and it’s almost never a bunch finish." This emphasis on tactical positioning and technical skill, rather than just raw speed, is a key learning curve for the Muc-Off-SRCT-Storck rider.
Despite the recent mechanical setback in Otley and the general high intensity of the UK circuit scene, White's participation in these events is crucial for his development. Competing regularly against strong European fields helps him to refine his race craft, improve his tactical awareness, and build the endurance necessary for the upcoming road race block in France.
White will be looking to carry the lessons learned from these demanding circuit races into the longer-form road races in France in August, as he continues to build his international racing experience.
