The newly revamped IAAF / VTB Bank Continental Cup is just around the corner and teams from Africa, Americas, Asia/Pacific and Europe are ready to take on the challenge to win the first IAAF Continental Cup trophy.
A real trans-continental battle in the Men’s Long Jump event that will feature Bermuda’s Tyrone Smith, as all four competing teams boasting genuine victory claims.
Smith competed recently in three events, Smith in the Palio della Quercia Track Meet in Rovereto, Italy, where he finished third with a leap of 7.73m, he also recently competed in the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Rieti, Italy, finishing 7th with another leap of 7.73m. Smith also competed in a ISTAF Event in Berlin finishing 6th with a leap of 7.83m.
World leader Christian Reif heads the European challenge following the German's impressive 8.47m leap to land his continental title in Barcelona. Expect World champion and Diamond League winner Dwight Phillips (AME) of the USA to figure strongly with a season's best of 8.46m behind him. The Australian Fabrice Lapierre (ASP) should also be a factor as he showed when landing the IAAF World Indoor title in March. Africa’s bid is led by South Africa’s respected World and Olympic silver medalist Godfrey Mokoena.
