The Bermuda Track and Field Association’s (BTFA) National Cross Country Championships will be held this coming weekend, Saturday December 12th @ 8:30am at the Botanical Gardens.
BTFA President Donna Watson said, “We are expecting a great turnout as we have had over 100 athletes compete in the Cross Country Series this year. Also with the great turnout of over 250 athletes participating in the KPMG Invitational Front Street Mile trials I think several athletes who have not participated in the series will participate in the championships”.
“We will be presenting the winners of the Cross Country Series and crowning the National Champion in each age group. I spoke to a few athletes like Kavin Smith who has been unable to participate in the cross country series, I am expecting to see Jay Donawa and maybe even Chris Eastwanik compete, continued Watson.
“I noticed Ashley Eastwanik competed in the trials and maybe she will compete in the championships along with Victoria Fiddick. In the children's Division there should be some good competition in the Under 14 Boys Division with Nakeno Creighton and Justin Ferreira having some close races, Zakiyyah Showers who has been dominating the Under 12 Girls Division, there have been close races in the Under 14 Girls Division with Kyrah Scraders, Aaliyah Nolan, Dezhane West and Jordan Bascome. The men's masters and senior masters have had some tight races”, Watson went on to say.
Watson continued, “The BTFA Banquet is coming up soon, Saturday December 19th at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Things are looking good for the event with all 3 of our speakers confirmed Brian Wellman, Troy Douglas and Clarance "Nicky" Saunders all excited and ready to come home and motivate our athletes.
“Tyrone Smith will also be coming home for the event, all of our athletes overseas in University will be in attendance. We have invited all of the Past Presidents of the BTFA as our guest for the evening. We are expecting the Acting Sports Minister, Minister Zane Desilva to be in attendance”, concluded Watson.
