2014 Denton Hurdle Awards Announced

The 29th Denton Hurdle Awards presentation took place inside the Warwick Academy Gymnasium. The awards handed out were in honor of the late Denton Hurdle.

Selah Tuzo from Northlands Primary won the Primary School Girls category. This year Tuzo earned the distinction of becoming the youngest ever winner of the Bermuda Day youth race at the age of nine. She has also won the Front Street Mile, the National Cross Country Championships, Dash at Dark, Telford Mile and the Butterfield and Vallis 2k race.

Honorable Mention was Awarded to Track star Za’Kayza Parsons from Heron Bay Primary School andDanni Watson from Elliot Primary School

T’syi Showers from West End Primary won the Primary School Boys Division, Showers is Head Boy, Prefect, House Captain and Librarian at West End Primary. He has earned the distinction of being on the principals list every term in P4, P5 and P6 and won the school math competition. Showers captains West End Primary’s Football, Cricket, Track and Hockey teams.

Honrable Mention was awarded to Marcus Scotland – Saltus Grammar School and Nicholas Pilgrim – Warwick Academy

The Middle School Girls Title was shared by two young ladies who had phenomenal years, Sakari Famous from Dellwood Middle School and Madelyn Moore from Warwick Academy. Famous has won back to back High Jump Silver Medals at the CARIFTA games. She has also broken the BSSF High Jump Record for two consecutive years.

Moore has collected three Gold, three Silver and a Bronze Medal during her participation in the last two CARIFTA games in Swimming. In the process of amassing this medal haul she broke the 50m Freestyle CARIFTA record in April of this year. She represented Warwick Academy in Swimming, Netball, Basketball, Cross Country, Track and Field, Badminton, Softball and Hockey.

Honorable Mention was awarded to Messiah Greaves from Bermuda High School.

Sean Tucker from Warwick Academy won the Middle School Boys Division. At the young age of 14 Tucker has already represented Bermuda in multiple sports. He has represented Bermuda in Track and Field in the CAC Age group Championships in Curacao, Basketball in the Under 14 Global Cup in Florida, Volleyball for the Under 17 Volleyball National team in the ECVA tournament in Antigua and the under 12 Bermuda Rugby Junior team in the Bahamas.

Honorable mention was awarded to Jahkeylo Burgess from T. N. Tatem Middle School

Taahira Butterfield from CedarBridge Academy captured the Senior School Girls Trophy. Butterfield has represented Bermuda at the CARIFTA games since 2011. She also represented Bermuda at the CAC JR. Championship Games in El Savador in 2012 and the IAAF World Youth Championships in the Ukraine in 2013. She has also represented Bermuda with the Under 18 Netball team at the Jean Pierre Netball tournament. She is a Principal Honours Student and will graduate with a 3.76 GPA.

Honorable mention was awarded to Gabriella Arnold from Warwick Academy

Marcus Smith from Saltus Grammar School was a former winner in 2010 in the Middle School Division picked up the Senior School Boy’s Trophy. He’s Deputy Head Boy and Prefect at Saltus. Smith has also been part of the National Youth Volleyball team programme. Smith has attained 10 GCSEs and is on the Headmasters Honor Roll. He was also part of the first Bermuda cast to take part in the Caribbean Secondary School Drama Festival winning best dancer at the festival.

Honorable Mention was awarded to Brandon Sousa from Mount Saint Agnes Academy .
