Donnybrook, an Andrews 80 owned by Annapolis Yacht Club member Jim Muldoon, was one of the 165 boats entered in the 49th biennial Newport-to-Bermuda Race that starts on June 20th.
However, on Thursday morning Muldoon announced that he won't be competing due to damage sustained while sailing through severe storms en route to the Caribbean this past winter. Donnybrook is currently undergoing repairs at Hinckley Yachts yard in Newport, R.I.
The Naval Academy Varsity Offshore Sailing Team will have two entries in Swift and Defiance. Midshipman Nick Tucker will skipper Swift, one of the old McCurdy and Rhodes-designed Navy 44-footers. Midshipman Scott Miller will skipper Defiance, one of the academy's newer Pedrick-designed 44s.
Navy has also entered Constellation, a donated TP52 that will be skippered by Midshipman Joshua Forgacs.
Other Annapolis-area boats entered in Newport-Bermuda include the Sydney 43 Christopher Dragon (Andrew & Linda Weiss), the Grand Soleil 37 Kalevala II (Tapio Saavalainen) and three J/120s — Moneypenny (Ken Comerford), Shinnecock (James Praley) and Windborn (Rick Born).
Newport-Bermuda, organized by the Cruising Club of American and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, is a 635-nautical mile jaunt that finishes at St. David’s Lighthouse. Race chairman Fred Deichmann reports that 81 of the 165 skippers entered competed in the 2012 edition of the race. Boats hail from 21 states ranging from Maine to California with particularly strong turnouts from skippers residing in the New England (67) and Chesapeake Bay (20) regions. There are 16 entries from foreign countries with the likes of Austria, Germany, Russia and Spain represented.
