On January 8th, 2014, Teacher’s Rugby Football Club (TRFC) was left stunned at the news that our ‘Gentle Giant’, Devrae Noel-Simmons, was called home.
Simmons joined TRFC in 2001, he and his team were League Champions in 1999, 2000, 2002 through 2005, 2008, and 2010. He won Forward Player of the Year in 2012, and was Head Coach for the 2013/2014 season.
Simmons also represented his country with the Bermuda Men’s Senior team, touring the UK, Caribbean and Canada. In the last 2 years, he has been heavily involved with coaching of youth rugby, both with the Bermuda Rugby Union and the Beyond Rugby program. His school team, T.N. Tatum, won the Inter-school Championship in 2013.
He became more than just a player on the field, he became a friend, a coach and an inspiration to us all.
To know Simmons was an honor, to know him was to know a colorful man with a Big Heart and a Big Smile.
His powerful presence was one that could not be tamed, and he has left an everlasting imprint on all those who were privileged to be a part of his journey.
