Hospice & Palliative Care Education Brian Morris Scholarship

IslandStats.com
Friends of Hospice has unveiled the Brian Morris Palliative Care Scholarship, in honor of the Bermudian professional golfer.

The Friends of Hospice Brian Morris Palliative Care Scholarship will provide up $25,000 per year to a Bermudian studying medicine or nursing, with an emphasis on those with a specialty in hospice and palliative care. The scholarship will be maintained throughout the duration of their academic programme, provided they maintain a 3.0 grade average (or regional equivalent) and demonstrate their commitment to community service.

This scholarship comes as part of the Friends of Hospice’s commitment to developing the on-island talent pool for hospice and palliative care.

The Friends of Hospice Annual Brian Morris Memorial Golf Tournament, following its inaugural event last year, will become an annual event with proceeds going towards to scholarship fund. This year’s event will take place on Friday, May 3rd at Ocean View Golf Course.

Jennifer Mahoney, Executive Director of the Friends of Hospice, said: ‘We are delighted to announce the new Friends of Hospice Brian Morris Palliative Care Scholarship to assist those with an interest in hospice and palliative care education. We look forward to helping to nurture local talent in this underserved field as well as to creating opportunities for those who mean to share their skills with their island home.’

‘We are honored that the Morris family have been so supportive of our mission and are pleased to be able to continue commemorating the giving spirit of Brian.’

Laurie Morris, Brian Morris’ widow, said: ‘We are so touched by the creation of the Friends of Hospice Brian Morris Palliative Care Scholarship and proud that it is going to strengthen Bermuda’s hospice and palliative care in the long term. Brian was passionate about others and it’s so fitting that his legacy will reflect that and show appreciation for the care that he received. Everyone deserves access to exceptional care, and this is another step towards ensuring that happens.’

The Friends of Hospice Annual Brian Morris Memorial Golf Tournament is made possible by support from the community, including principal sponsors Gosling’s and Ascot Re. Other significant supporters include Lindo’s Group of Families and PRP Performa.

Malcolm Gosling, President & CEO of Gosling’s Export, said: ‘Gosling's is an enthusiastic sponsor of this worthwhile event, the proceeds of which created the Friends of Hospice Brian Morris Palliative Care Scholarship. After his passing, Brian Morris continues to be a catalyst in uniting us and providing a much-needed service which will benefit the Bermuda community as a whole. Brian was such an inspirational character, especially in the face of adversity. While he is not with us in body his "one love" spirit is very much alive.’

Carmen Mendonca, ESG Committee Member for Ascot, said: ‘Ascot Bermuda is proud to have sponsored the inaugural Friends of Hospice Brian Morris Memorial Golf Tournament, an event our team holds close to our hearts. We are so pleased to see the success of the event catalyse the Friends of Hospice Brian Morris Palliative Care Scholarship, an award we will continue supporting.

‘To many who knew Brian, he continues to be part of our Ascot family through his unforgettable inspirational spirit. Brian’s positivity and selflessness both on and off the golf course was a testament to his character and we couldn’t have picked better partners in Friends of Hospice to continue helping others as a compliment to Brian’s legacy.’
