Haley Powell, Sean Bouchard and the Roger Williams University Sailing team had a successful showing in the opening weekend of the 2010-11 season with a win, two runner-up finishes, and a fourth place performance in their regattas on the weekend.
Roger Williams traveled upstate to Maine Maritime to compete in the Penbay Open. Sailing on the waters of the Bagaduce River, Roger Williams University finished as the winners of the Penbay Open, putting up a score of 102, 11 better than runner-up Dartmoth College. Senior George Saunders, and sophomore Adrienne White led the way for Roger Williams University, cruising to an 18-point win in A division while finishing fourth or better in nine of the 12 races. The B division, consisting of sophomores Powell and Bianca Rom came in second on the strength of a consistent performance, never finishing lower than ninth in the regatta.
In the Harman Cup, which was also hosted by Maine Maritime, Roger Williams University finished second with a score of 27. Sailing in Colgate 26s, the foursome of sophomore Alec Anderson, senior Joshua Saltmarsh, junior Zack Shapiro, and junior Alex Feldman put together a solid showing, placing second or first in four of the eight races. Yale University won the regatta with a score of 12.
The Roger Williams University team also competed in the Yale University-hosted Harry Anderson Trophy, the largest regatta of the weekend. Among the 20-team field, the Roger Williams University finished runner-up to the Brown University Bears by only three points. In the A division, Roger Williams finished with a score of 53, good for first, while earning 62 points in B Division, falling just four points short of first place. At A Division, senior Cy Thompson, junior Kelly Stannard, and sophomore Alyssa Seifert combined for the win, with top-five performances in ten of the 12 races, while junior Seifert, Bouchard, and junior Tyler Wilson came in sixth or better in every race but two at B Division.
