In front of 1,200 fans who had made a tortuous journey North, substitute Jay Dasilva was brought down as he dribbled into the box and Wells coolly dispatched from the spot with three minutes of added time on the clock.
A point was no more than Bristol City deserved after Jack Clarke had given Sunderland the lead in the 59th minute in a game the visitors largely looked comfortable in and created openings for more than the final ironic twist.
