Lauren Cardwell and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues kicked off their national championship campaign with a fiercely contested 1-1 draw against reigning Canada West champions the UBC Thunderbirds in Waterloo.
The tournament opener on Warrior Field pit two regional heavyweights against each other, with Ontario champions Toronto trading blows early against an equally determined UBC side in a breathless opening phase.
The Varsity Blues struck first blood courtesy of first-year forward Vanessa Marques, who showed nerves of steel to slot home a cleanly struck penalty stroke past the reach of UBC shot-stopper Robyn Goh.
Toronto’s lead, however, proved short-lived.
Just four minutes later, the Thunderbirds replied in chaotic fashion. Pouncing on a loose-ball scramble inside the circle, Amy Stelling reacted quickest to nudge home the equaliser and drag her side level.
From there, the fixture developed into a tactical, end-to-end battle of attrition. Possession shifted frequently across the midfield, with neither side able to carve out sustained control for lengthy stretches.
At the back, Toronto relied heavily on second-year goalkeeper Mary Yang, who produced a string of vital stops to keep UBC at bay. Ahead of her, experienced defender Kirsten D'Silva and 2026 National Player of the Year Maggie Mullins were instrumental in containing a relentless Vancouver attack. Mullins was later named Player of the Match for a commanding defensive display.
At the opposite end, Goh stood equally tall between the posts for UBC, repelling Toronto's set-piece opportunities to ensure the opening clash of the national showcase concluded with the points shared.
