Local favourite Tariq Simons saw his singles run come to an end at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium, as American qualifier Rohan Sachdev proved too sharp in the second round of the ITF Bermuda Open.
Simons, who had captured local headlines with a thrilling opening-round victory, fought gamely in a tight opening set but was ultimately unable to stem Sachdev's momentum, falling 7-6, 6-3.
At the sharp end of the draw, top-seeded Jamaican Blaise Bicknell underlined his tournament credentials with a commanding display, dropping just three games in a clinical 6-0, 6-3 demolition of the United States' Kian Vakili.
Second seed Keshav Chopra was made to work considerably harder. The American was forced to battle back from a set down against compatriot Jeffrey Fradkin, digging deep to claim a gritty 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph.
There was no such trouble for third seed Matt Kuhar, who advanced to the quarter-finals when American compatriot Drew Van Orderlain was forced to retire trailing 6-2.
Seventh-seeded Pole Kacper Szymkowiak produced one of the most ruthless performances of the afternoon, routing American Carel Aubriel Ngounoue 6-0, 6-1.
Elsewhere in the singles draw, Gray Voelzke upset sixth seed Noah Schachter 6-2, 7-5 in an all-American encounter, while Nathan Cox outlasted Barbados’ Kaipo Marshall 7-6, 4-6, 3-1 after Marshall was forced to retire in the deciding set.
In doubles quarter-final action, second-seeded Canadians Volodymyr Gurenko and Niels Peter Van Noord held their nerve in a deciding match tie-break to overcome American duo Alexander Bravo and Kian Vakili 6-3, 4-6, 10-3.
The shock of the round came as the unseeded pairing of Juan Sebastian Dominguez Collado (Guatemala) and Aydan Gomez Osorio (Curaçao) stunned third seeds Kaipo Marshall and Stephen Slocombe of Barbados, rallying in the super tie-break to take a pulsating 6-3, 6-7, 10-6 victory.
