ITF Bermuda Open Mallory Edged & Simons Duel Suspended

IslandStats.com
Three opening-round singles encounters went the full three-set distance on an eventful day of main draw action as week two of the ITF M15 Bermuda Open got under way.

Local interest was front and centre at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium, where Bermuda’s Trey Mallory pushed American Kian Vakili to the brink in a high-calibre baseline duel. Mallory asserted control early to take the opening set 6-3, but Vakili mounted a resolute response to level the tie before keeping his composure in a tense third-set decider to seal a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Meanwhile, fellow Bermudian wildcard Tariq Simons remains locked in a battle against American qualifier Mitchell Dobek. Simons edged a tight opening set 7-6, but with Dobek forcing a 6-6 deadlock in the second, play had to be suspended overnight due to fading light.

Elsewhere in the singles draw, United States representative Nathan Cox came through another gruelling three-setter against Jamaica’s John Chin, prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

American qualifier Rohan Sachdev supplied the shock of the round by eliminating fifth seed Justin Roberts of the Bahamas in straight sets, sealing a 6-4, 7-6 win.

Seventh-seeded Polish player Kacper Szymkowiak enjoyed smoother progress, seeing off Barbadian wildcard Stephen Slocombe 6-2, 6-3, while American Carel Aubriel Ngounoue produced the day's most clinical display, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 rout of compatriot and lucky loser Danny Al Barbour.

Drew Van Orderlain completed the trio of three-set singles marathons, recovering from an opening tie-break reverse to defeat Israeli qualifier Ben Chetewy Ungar 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles draw brings upsets and suspended ties

The doubles competition delivered immediate fireworks, headlined by an emphatic straight-sets upset over seeded opposition.

The unseeded American pairing of Tyler Mercier and Carel Aubriel Ngounoue swept past fourth seeds Zachary Mintz and Australia's Norbert Zielinski, dropping just three games on their way to a comprehensive 6-3, 6-0 triumph.

British-American duo Nicholas Adesalu and Alexander Wriedt also secured their passage to the quarter-finals in clinical fashion, brushing aside the South American tandem of Chile's Leon Achurra Correa and Brazil's Miguel Bechtlufft Cardoso 6-3, 6-3.

Guatemala’s Juan Sebastian Dominguez Collado and Curaçao’s Aydan Gomez Osorio joined them in the last eight after producing an assured 6-4, 6-2 win over American pair Henry Bilicic and Rohan Sachdev.

Local hopes in the doubles remain alive but in the balance after John Chin and Trey Mallory's clash against second seeds Volodymyr Gurenko and Niels Peter Van Noord was halted by the conditions. The Canadian second seeds claimed the opening set 6-4, before the Caribbean-Bermudian pairing struck back to lead 2-1 on serve in the second set prior to play being suspended.
