Bermudian defender Lauren Cardwell and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues have secured their place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) gold-medal match after shutting out the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 at Alumni Field.
The No. 2-seeded Blues were made to work for their victory in a fiercely contested semi-final against No. 3 seed Waterloo, with goalkeepers Mary Yang and Grace Miller trading key saves during a scoreless first three quarters.
The deadlock was finally broken in dramatic fashion late in the third quarter, with Toronto striking twice in the space of just 32 seconds in the 44th minute.
Fourth-year Scottish forward Ava Airnes opened the scoring with a composed finish—marking her third goal in four matches—before first-year midfielder Imke Arndt doubled the advantage almost immediately from the restart with her maiden postseason goal.
Faced with a late Waterloo onslaught in the final quarter, Cardwell and the Toronto defensive unit stood firm. Anchored by OUA Player of the Year Maggie Mullins and all-star Kirsten D'Silva, the Blues dominated possession to see out the contest, while Yang finished with three saves to preserve the clean sheet.
The victory sets up a high-stakes championship rematch against hosts York Lions on Sunday at 1:00 PM, where Toronto will look to claim OUA gold for the second consecutive season.
