Freshman Zachary McGuire delivered an unblemished weekend on court to help Sacred Heart University produce a strong showing at the Army Invitational at West Point.
The Saltus Grammar School alumnus underlined his pedigree in the US collegiate ranks, sweeping to a flawless 4-0 combined record across singles and doubles competition in New York.
McGuire showed plenty of grit to open his account on Saturday, battling back from a set down against Fairleigh Dickinson's Asaf Schwartz. After dropping the opener, the Bermudian held his nerve in the crucial moments to level proceedings before prevailing in a decisive match tie-break, securing a gritty 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 triumph.
He carried that momentum into Sunday’s singles assignment against Holy Cross' Colton Parker. Producing a much sharper, clinical display from the baseline, McGuire controlled the tempo throughout to seal a straight-sets 6-4, 6-2 victory.
McGuire was equally effective in doubles play, pairing up to claim two further victories across the weekend as the Pioneers continued their encouraging autumn campaign.
The standout display marks another promising milestone for the former Bermuda junior champion, who has quickly made his presence felt at Division I level.
