Hampton University men's tennis wrapped up a demanding weekend of action at the CNU Duals, with Bermudian head coach Jovan Jordan-Whitter overseeing a pair of encouraging victories alongside a tough test against Division I opposition.
The Pirates laid down an early marker on Friday evening, mounting an impressive fightback to edge tournament hosts Christopher Newport 4-3.
After dropping the opening doubles point, Hampton showed resilience across the individual rubbers. Rafael Padilha, Kohei Konishi, Kevin Jorquera, and Ibrahim Carrington all delivered crucial singles victories to turn the contest on its head and seal a hard-fought opening triumph.
Saturday brought a more difficult test against a clinical Longwood Lancers outfit. Hampton started brightly as Padilha and Jorquera combined in tandem to dispatch Daniel Borisov and Ricards Sparks 6-1. However, the Lancers hit back emphatically, sweeping all six singles rubbers to take the tie.
Jordan-Whitter’s charges issued the perfect response on Sunday, producing a dominant display to whitewash the Mary Washington Eagles 4-0 in singles play.
Padilha and Konishi maintained their fine weekend form with commanding straight-sets victories, with team-mate Arora following suit in similar fashion. Carrington was made to work harder at number four singles, but held his nerve in a deciding set to complete a clean sweep and ensure Hampton rounded out the weekend on a high.
