Lauren Cardwell helped the University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team defeat the York Lions 1-0 in their home opener at Back Campus Fields.
Continuing her strong start to the season was second-year forward Catalina Meilleur. Meilleur scored the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute was the Calgary native beat goalkeeper Ella Ciesielski to bring her goal total to three after the opening two matches of the season.
On the defensive side of the field, veteran defenders Maggie Mullins, Kirsten D'Silva and Jada Mendonca all played key roles in the win. Meanwhile, second-year defenders Lisa Van Der Knap and Danielle D'Silva also made key contributions. In goal, second-year keeper Mary Yang picked up right where she left off after the season opener in Hamilton, earning her second clean sheet of the season.
