Bermudian cyclist Zander Miller produced a commanding, versatile display to capture the Men’s Category 3 King of the Mountains jersey and take victory in the final-stage criterium at the prestigious Green Mountain Stage Race in Vermont.
Miller led a nine-strong Bermudian contingent competing across five separate categories over the four-day event from 4 to 7 September, testing their speed, climbing, tactical nous, and sheer endurance against high-calibre international fields.
The multi-stage challenge posed four distinct tactical hurdles: an opening individual time trial against the clock, a punishing lap-based circuit race, a gruelling mountain road race, and a high-speed downtown criterium featuring sharp turns and time-bonus sprints.
Turning out for Winners Edge in Men’s Category 3, Miller delivered across every terrain. He laid the foundation for his mountain classification victory on stage two by sweeping maximum points on both designated climbs, before collecting second- and fourth-place points on the climbs during stage three. His final haul of 22 points sealed the King of the Mountains crown, four clear of his nearest rival.
Miller then demonstrated blistering speed on the final afternoon in Burlington, executing a clinical ride to take stage honours in the criterium. That performance also earned him 19 sprint points on the day, propelling him to third in the overall points classification. Combined with steady finishes of 25th in the time trial, 18th in the circuit race, and 23rd in the road race, Miller wrapped up 15th on the general classification in 6hr 37min 19sec, just 4min 28sec off the yellow jersey.
VT Construction rider Dominique Mayho secured another Category 3 highlight by sprinting to an impressive third place on stage two's circuit race. Coupled with an intermediate sprint runner-up spot, Mayho finished fifth overall in the sprint classification with nine points, ending the tour 42nd overall.
Bicycle Works representative Che’Quan Richardson competed strongly through the opening three days, carding 67th in the time trial, 66th on the circuit, and 64th on the road race before stepping aside ahead of the finale.
In the elite Men’s Pro/1/2 division, Nicholas Narraway was instrumental in an exceptional weekend for Competitive Edge Racing. Narraway secured a brilliant 12th place in the general classification, clocking a cumulative time of 8hr 3min 42sec to finish just 2min 45sec behind the overall winner.
After placing 21st in the time trial, Narraway crossed eighth in the circuit race—Competitive Edge’s top finish of the day—before taking 26th in the road race. While listed 40th in the final criterium, the Bermudian played a pivotal role at the front of the peloton, controlling breakaways to help set up a sensational one-two sweep for team-mates Ryan Drummond and Andrew Strohmeyer. Narraway was also active in intermediate bursts, earning 11th overall in the sprint standings and 13th in the mountains classification.
In the Women’s Pro/1/2/3 division, VT Construction duo Pansy Olander and Charlotte Millington both conquered all four stages. Olander finished 46th overall, highlighted by an eye-catching 26th-place finish in the circuit race with the same time as the stage winner, before placing 22nd in the criterium. Millington took 49th overall, carding her best result with 41st in the stage three road race.
Juniors Jacob Wright and Dylan Eiselt gained invaluable experience in a fierce youth field, completing the full four stages in 88th and 90th overall respectively, with Eiselt producing a fine 57th-place effort in the closing criterium. Veteran Steve Millington also lined up in the Men’s 50+ division, finishing 33rd in the opening time trial.
