Bermuda Finish Runners-Up After Goombay Cup Heartbreak

IslandStats.com
Bermuda's Under-15 girls produced a commanding victory over hosts the Bahamas before falling just short in a winner-takes-all showdown with the Cayman Islands as the Goombay Cup came to an end.

Needing victories in both of their final-day matches to lift the trophy, Bermuda comfortably overcame the hosts before seeing their title hopes dashed by the eventual champions.

Bermuda made the perfect start against the Bahamas, taking the lead after just five minutes when pressure inside the penalty area forced an own goal.

The hosts responded before half-time to level the scores at 1-1, ensuring the contest remained evenly poised at the interval.

Bermuda wasted little time regaining control after the restart. Just one minute into the second half, Kierra Broadley-Samuels restored the lead before striking again only three minutes later to put Bermuda firmly in command at 3-1.

Substitute Priya Dill, Bermuda's leading scorer throughout the tournament, added the fourth goal in the 43rd minute to complete an impressive performance and seal a convincing 4-1 victory.

The tournament title came down to the final match, with Bermuda knowing only a victory over the Cayman Islands would be enough to claim the Goombay Cup.

A disciplined first-half display kept the scores level at 0-0, setting up a tense second period between the competition's top two sides.

The decisive moment arrived in the 34th minute, when the Cayman Islands broke the deadlock with what proved to be the only goal of the game.

Despite pushing for an equaliser, Bermuda were unable to find a way through the Cayman defence, with the 1-0 defeat confirming the Cayman Islands as tournament champions.

Although the title slipped away in the final match, Bermuda left the Bahamas with plenty of positives after an impressive campaign that featured exciting attacking football and another goal from leading scorer Priya Dill, ultimately finishing as deserving runners-up.
