Bermuda's national time-trial champion Nicholas Narraway made an encouraging start to his campaign at the 16th Sibiu Cycling Tour in Romania, placing himself firmly in the mix after a high-octane opening stage.
Competing in the prestigious UCI 2.1-rated Europe Tour event, Narraway stopped the clock in 4 minutes and 34 seconds to secure 48th place in the opening Stage 1 International Time Trial.
The short, technical 3.2km loop, which started and finished in the historic heart of Sibiu, was designed for pure, explosive power. Narraway, flying the flag for Competitive Edge Racing, handled the tricky urban course with precision, finishing just 18 seconds adrift of the scorching benchmark set by the stage winner.
That honor went to Denmark's Julius Johansen, representing WorldTour powerhouse UAE Team Emirates - XRG, who mastered the cobblestones and tight corners to stop the clock in a blistering 4:16.
The Sibiu Cycling Tour regularly attracts some of the top professional developmental teams and WorldTour outfits in global cycling, making it a premier proving ground for riders look to fine-tune their form ahead of major summer assignments.
For Narraway, matching his engines against the likes of UAE Team Emirates on a pure sprint course serves as a vital benchmark. The narrow margins across the top 50 riders underline the razor-thin nature of European racing, where fractions of a second separate the field.
The opening prologue acts as a fast curtain-raiser before the peloton hits the brutal mountain terrain that defines the tour. Narraway will look to carry this sharp short-course speed into the grueling climbing stages over the next three days, as the race snakes up into the high-altitude challenges of the Southern Carpathians.
