Toby Barnes produced an emphatic solo masterclass to capture the 2026 Lister Horsfall Ilkley Grand Prix, leaving a heavily fractured elite field scattered across the brutal hills of Wharfedale.
Among those grinding through the selective town-centre circuit was Bermuda's Conor White, who secured a hard-fought 58th-place finish in the prestigious National Activity (Nat A) one-day showpiece.
White, flying the flag for British elite outfit Jakroo Handsling Racing, stopped the clock at 52:52—crossing the line 2:01 behind Barnes, who had spent the majority of the evening dismantling the peloton from the front.
The Ilkley Grand Prix is widely regarded as the most selective town-centre criterium on the domestic circuit. Boasting 32 meters of punishment every single lap, the course is anchored by the stinging, 200-meter ramp up Riddings Road, transforming a traditional criterium into a war of attrition.
From the gun, the high-octane pace instantly put the field under pressure. Barnes, riding for French outfit UV Aube, blew the race apart just six minutes into the contest. He unleashed a devastating, long-range solo attack that shattered the main peloton into isolated chasing groups.
As Barnes grew his lead at the front, eventually crossing the line completely alone in 50:51 to take a dominant victory, White found himself locked in a relentless battle for positioning within a heavily depleted chasing group.
The technical, high-speed descents down Wilton Road and the rapid finish straight past Bettys on The Grove required absolute concentration. Despite the lactic acid building with each ascent of the hill, the Bermudian time-trial specialist showcased his trademark engine to maintain his rhythm.
White’s gritty performance to comfortably complete the distance inside the top 60 underlines his continued progression on the British elite scene, providing another solid block of high-intensity racing as the National Circuit Series moves into its peak summer schedule.
