Mallory Bows out of Monastir Thriller after Three-Set Battle

IslandStats.com
Bermuda’s Trey Mallory suffered agonizing first-round heartbreak at the M15 Monastir tournament in Tunisia recently, falling just short in a grueling three-set battle against France's Valentin Lapalu.

Competing on the rapid hard courts of the Magic Hotel Tours event on the ITF Men’s World Tennis Tour, the young Bermudian pushed his highly ranked European opponent to the absolute limit before fading in the midday heat.

Mallory started the match with tremendous tactical intent, asserting his authority from the baseline and breaking the Frenchman's serve early in the opening frame. Showcasing an improved first-serve percentage and dictating play with his forehand, the Bermudian held his nerve to close out the first set 6-4.

The second set unfolded into a ferocious, physical standoff. With neither player willing to yield an inch on their service games, the frame was inevitably pushed into a high-stakes tie-break.

Mallory traded heavy blows and fought tenaciously to put himself within touching distance of a straight-sets victory, but Lapalu demonstrated immense defensive resilience, snatching the tie-break 7-6 to level the match and break Bermudian momentum.

The physical exertions of the opening two sets appeared to take a heavy toll on the islander as the match entered a decisive third frame.

Capitalizing on a string of rare unforced errors from Mallory, the clinical Frenchman reasserted his authority, breaking serve twice to open up a commanding lead. Lapalu ultimately coasted through the final set 6-2 to book his place in the round of 16.

Despite the early exit, the high-intensity minutes against quality European opposition offer invaluable professional mileage for Mallory as he continues to sharpen his game on the international hard-court circuit.
